Registration Requirements Abolishment
On June 15, 2001 President Kuchma signed a decree abolishing the requirement for foreigners to register with local police and registration officials within 72 hours of arrival. As of July 1st, foreigners will register as part of arrival procedures at border checkpoints.
However, American citizens will still have to register with the local Office of Visas and Registration (OVIR) if their stay in Ukraine is longer than six months.
The change will enable foreigners to travel throughout Ukraine without having to undergo time-consuming registration procedures. Please advise us of any discrepancies in interpretation of the decree.
This decision, as well as abolishment of the need for an invitation to obtain Ukrainian tourist visas, are all welcome steps in a move away from Soviet restrictions. The decree also puts a gradual end to the need for Ukrainian citizens to acquire residential permits to live in larger cities.
